PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior G Natalie Marchese
scored a team-high 14 points and dished out a team-best five
assists, and senior/junior F Laurel McWilliams posted a
double-double with 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to lead
the Norwich University women's basketball team to a 67-58 victory
over Johnson & Wales University in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) game Saturday afternoon.
Senior G Ally Daniels added 12 points, eight rebounds and five
steals for the Cadets (16-6, 8-2 GNAC), who continue to hold down
the top spot in the conference standings. Senior G Erica Rate
chipped in 11 points for NU, which rallied from an eight-point
second half deficit to win.
Norwich trailed 45-37 with 10:49 to play in the second stanza,
but an 18-1 run by the Cadets over a span of six minutes gave the
visitors a 55-46 advantage at the 5:00 mark. Norwich then proceeded
to make 10-of-11 free throws in the final 3:40 to seal the victory.
Marchese hit all seven of her attempts from the charity stripe down
the stretch. For the game, the Cadets hit 24-of-30 free throws
compared to just 9-of-17 for the Wildcats.
A pair of three-pointers by Alexia Ramirez in the first
three minutes helped Johnson & Wales (11-12, 6-4 GNAC) jump out
to a 10-2 lead at the 17:35 mark. Twelve unanswered points by
Norwich helped the Cadets move in front 14-10 with 11:53 to play in
the opening stanza. NU maintained its lead throughout the remainder
of the first half, and the Cadets carried a 28-23 advantage into
the intermission.
Norwich led by eight points (33-25) less than three minutes into
the second half, but a 20-4 run by Johnson & Wales over the
next seven minutes allowed the Wildcats to take their 45-37
advantage. JWU scored just 13 points the rest of the way, though,
as Norwich turned up the defensive intensity.
The game featured a total of 44 turnovers, with Norwich
committing 26 miscues and Johnson & Wales making 18 gaffes.
Neither team shot very well from the field, with the Cadets
making 37.7 percent (20-of-53) of their shots and the Wildcats
hitting 31.9 percent (22-of-69) of their field goal attempts.
Norwich held a 50-39 rebounding edge in the contest.
Morgan Wilson led all scorers with 19 points for JWU. Ramirez
added 17 points, five assists, four steals and four blocks for the
Wildcats.
Norwich will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 16, when the
Cadets travel to Boston, Mass., to battle Suffolk University in
another key GNAC contest. Tip-off for the conference match-up is
set for 7 p.m.
