RUTLAND, Vt. - Sophomore F Julie Fortier and
junior F Sarah Scardino each potted goals, and sophomore G Chiara
Traversa stopped all 10 shots that she faced to lead the Norwich
University women's ice hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Castleton
State College in an ECAC East women's ice hockey game Wednesday
evening at Spartan Arena.
The Cadets (14-4-3, 12-3-2 ECAC East) completely dominated the
contest, outshooting Castleton State by a 62-10 margin. Norwich was
only able to get two shots past CSC goaltender Katharyn Dembowski,
who turned aside 60 shots in the loss.
NU opened the scoring at 7:57 of the first period when Fortier
scored her team-leading 17th goal of the season off an assist from
sophomore F Melissa Rundlett. Rundlett started the play when she
snapped off a shot, which was stopped. Fortier then corralled the
rebound and scored.
Norwich made it 2-0 at 8:16 of the second period when Scardino
scored her sixth goal of the year. Junior F Kelsey Cone and junior
F Emily Goff were credited with assists on the play.
The Spartans, who have lost 11 straight games, fall to 3-18-1
(3-12-1 ECAC East) on the season.
Both teams enjoyed several power play opportunities in the
contest with Norwich going 0-for-4 on the man advantage and
Castleton State going 0-for-8 with the extra attacker
Norwich will returns to action on Friday, Feb. 12, when the
Cadets travel to Worcester, Mass., to take on the College of the
Holy Cross at 7 p.m.
