PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The host Plattsburgh State Cardinals
rallied to score two goals just over a minute apart in the third
period to complete a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the
top-ranked Norwich Cadets on Saturday in the 2010 PrimeLink Great
Northern Shootout Championship game.
Plattsburgh freshman forward Nick Jensen tied
the game at two with a power play goal at the 13:19 mark of the
third period off assists from Kyle Kudroch and
Ryan Corry.
Matt Bessing added the eventual game-winning
goal just 1:10 later to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.
Norwich (3-1-0, 2-0-0 ECAC East) had its chances in the last
five minutes of the game, however the Cadets were unable to come up
with the equalizer, even after head coach Mike
McShane pulled sophomore goaltender Alex
Dubois for the final 1:13.
After a scoreless first period, Plattsburgh (5-4-0, 3-4-0
SUNYAC) finally struck first when Eric Satim lit
the lamp off assists from Jared Docking and Jensen
at the 2:04 mark of the second period.
Norwich needed just 21 seconds to answer when Matt
McCann got the Cadets on the board beating Plattsburgh
goalie Josh Leis unassisted.
The Cadets took their only lead of the game at the 8:25 mark of
the third when junior forward Tim Houston
capitalized on Leis getting caught out of his crease to beat the
sophomore goalie from the side boards and give NU a 2-1 lead.
However, Norwich's penalty issues over the weekend finally
caught up with them when Jensen capitalized on Greg
Eskedjian's interference penalty, which was the sixth penalty
on the Cadets after they took 11 penalties on Friday against
Middlebury.
Leis made 26 saves in net for Plattsburgh to pick up his fourth
win of the season. Dubois made 29 stops for Norwich and picked up
his first loss of the season.
Chad Anderson and Shawn Baker
were named to the PrimeLink All-Tournament Team.
Plattsburgh's Satim was the Most Valuable Player.
Norwich continues its five-game road trip next weekend when the
Cadets return to interlock play as they travel to Amherst on Friday
at 7 p.m. and then follow up with Hamilton on Saturday at 3
p.m.
