PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Norwich men's hockey team
advanced to the 2010 PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout Championship
game with a 3-0 win over arch-rival Middlebury on Friday afternoon
at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Freshman forwards Travis Janke and
Shane Gorman each netted goals for the Cadets,
while sophomore Scott Schroeder continued his hot
start to the season with an empty-net goal for his third of the
season to seal the win.
Sophomore goaltender Alex Dubois was stellar
between the pipes once again, picking up his second shutout of the
season while stopping 27 shots to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Norwich (3-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC East) gave Middlebury plenty of
opportunities to score as the Cadets took a season-high 11
penalties for 22 minutes. However, NU held Middlebury 0-for-10 with
the man advantage.
Janke gave the Cadets the only lead they would need with his
third goal of the season at the 8:51 mark of the first period off
an assist from Kyle Thomas.
Freshman Shane Gorman scored his first
collegiate goal to make it 2-0 at the 7:27 mark of the second
period with an assist from Pasha Kozhokin.
Jon Yancheck made 30 saves in the loss for
Middlebury as the Panthers dropped to 0-3 on the season.
Norwich outshot Middlebury 33-27. Friday's game was the 141st
meeting between the two storied programs.
Norwich advances to the championship game where it will meet the
winner of SUNY Plattsburgh and St. John's University (Minn.)
at 7 p.m. at the Stafford Ice Arena.
