NORTHFIELD, Vt. - On a beautiful Homecoming day
the Norwich Cadets won 27-22. They overcome a 17-5 deficit and
overtook the UVM Catamounts with 22 unanswered points.
Norwich scored first at the five and a half minute mark on
a try from sophomore fullback Coltin Martin to take the early 5-0.
UVM came storming back and scored a try in the 14th
minute to tie the match 5-5. The Catamounts continued to
add to their lead by scoring two more tries in the
20th and 32nd minute to bring the score to
17-5.
Just before halftime, the Cadets close the gap with a score from
junior center Jaimes Plamondon. The teams entered the halftime
break with UVM leading 17-10.
Norwich battled hard in the second half with three unanswered
tries in the 44th, 68th, and
72nd minute to bring the score to 27-17. The last try
came from excellent support running by junior flanker Josh Nowak,who
placed the ball to the right of the posts. Junior prop Antonio
Marigliano's conversion gave the Cadets a 10-point lead. UVM
scored in the closing seconds to cap the scoring. Norwich held on
for a 27-22 win though.
"Today was a battle the entire match," NU head coach Bob Weggler
said. "Our discipline for 80 plus minutes was the difference
today. The homecoming alumni crowd should be most proud of the
Cadets' effort."
Norwich's 2nd side was also victorious with a 26-0
score over UVM. Norwich's Varsity Rugby is now 3-1 in the league
and 4-1 overall. The Cadets take on Bentley University next weekend
during Parents' weekend. Kick-off time is set for 2 p.m. at the Dog
River Rugby Pitch.
