WATERVILLE, Maine - The Colby College men's
hockey team was just seconds away from pulling off an upset of
third-ranked Norwich University, but the Cadets scored with 14
seconds remaining in regulation and the two teams settled for a 1-1
tie on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Rink.
Colby moves to 7-2-2, while Norwich stays unbeaten at 10-0-3
(6-0-1 ECAC East).
Colby freshman Michael Smigelski scored his fourth goal of the
season just 28 seconds into the third period off assists from Matt
Strickland and Jeoff Jarnot to give the Mules a 1-0 lead.
Colby goalie Cody McKinney nearly kept Norwich off the
scoreboard. He finished with 34 saves, including 13 in the opening
period.
Norwich finally broke up the shutout bid when freshman F
Pier-Oliver Cotnoir scored an unassisted tally with just 14 seconds
left in regulation. The Cadets had pulled senior G Ryan
Klingensmith for the extra attacker with 47 seconds to play.
Klingensmith made just 16 saves in the game, but did stop three
shots in overtime to preserve the tie.
Norwich will continue its ECAC East-NESCAC Interlock schedule
next weekend (Jan. 15-16), when the Cadets host ECAC East rivals
New England College and St. Anselm College. Live videostream
