BABSON PARK, Mass. - Freshman F Blake Forkey
scored two goals, including the game-tying marker in the final
minute of regulation, as the No. 2-ranked Norwich University men's
ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with Babson College Saturday
afternoon at Babson Skating Center.
Babson (10-7-2, 7-5-1) opened the scoring at 10:28 of the first
period when Mike Hoban scored off assists from PT Donato and Liam
Chatterton. Norwich outshot Babson 14-4 in the first period, but
the Cadets were unable to get anything past Beavers' goaltender
Zeke Testa.
Norwich (15-0-4, 11-0-2 ECAC East) tied the score at 1-1 midway
through the second period when Forkey scored at the 7:16 mark.
Sophomore D Shawn Baker and freshman F Colin Mulvey picked up
assists on the play.
The Cadets moved in front for the first time late in the second
period when freshman F Kyle Thomas scored at the 16:17 mark.
Sophomore D Owen Carpino picked up an assist on the tally, which
gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage.
Norwich held a 9-6 edge in shots in the second period, and the
Cadets skated into the second intermission clinging to the 2-1
advantage.
Babson tied the score at 2-2 midway through the third period
when Hoban struck again at the 7:33 mark. Hoban's second goal of
the contest, which came on the power play, was assisted by Terry
Woods and Ryan Smith. The Beavers then reclaimed the lead less than
one minute later when Donato potted a power play goal of his own at
the 8:30 mark. Chris Wood and Shane Farrell were credited with
assists on the tally, which moved Babson in front 3-2.
Norwich pulled senior G Ryan Klingensmith in favor of the extra
attacker, and Forkey came through with his second marker of the
game with just 50 seconds to play in regulation. Senior D Steve
Coon and junior F Chad Anderson both collected assists on the goal.
NU outshot Babson 10-7 in the third period, and the teams moved
into the overtime period with the score tied at 3-3.
Norwich registered the only shot of the extra session, and both
squads had to settle for the tie. With the tie, Norwich maintains
its nine-point lead in the ECAC East standings over second-place
Babson.
Klingensmith made 14 saves for the Cadets, while Testa finished
with 31 stops for the Beavers.
For the game, Norwich outshot Babson 34-17. The Cadets went
0-for-3 on the power play, while Babson converted 2-of-3
opportunities with the man-advantage.
Norwich will resume its four-game road trip next weekend (Feb.
5-6), when the Cadets travel to face NESCAC foes Middlebury and
Williams.
