BOSTON - Senior F Craig Serino netted a goal
and added an assist, and senior G Ryan Klingensmith stopped all 22
shots he faced to earn his sixth shutout of the season and lead the
No. 2-ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey team past
UMass-Boston, 2-0, Friday evening in an ECAC East contest at the
Clark Athletic Center.
The Cadets extend their unbeaten streak to 18 games and improve
to 15-0-3 overall and 11-0-1 in ECAC East play. The Beacons,
meanwhile, fall to 8-8-1 (4-7-1 ECAC East).
The win avenges Norwich's last loss which came against
UMass-Boston in the quarterfinals of last year's ECAC East
Tournament.
Following a scoreless first period, the Cadets took advantage of
a late first period penalty committed by the Beacons and scored
just 61 seconds into the second stanza when Serino and senior D
Eric Tallent combined to set up freshman F Kyle Thomas on the power
play for his team-leading 13th goal of the season and a 1-0
edge. The score snapped a scoring drought of 96:47 to UMass
Boston, dating back to last year's playoff contest.
The Beacons looked to even the score at the 8:00 mark when
Vinnie Jacona picked up a loose puck in the left crease and snapped
off a shot, but Klingensmith was able to recover and deflect the
shot with his pad to preserve the eventual shutout, which was the
10th of his career.
Serino gave Norwich an insurance goal with 4:24 remaining in the
middle period when he lifted a feed from junior D Greg Eskedjian
into the back of the net for his fourth tally of the year and a 2-0
margin at 15:36.
UMass-Boston goaltender Ryan Donovan made 24 saves for UMass
Boston in the loss.
Norwich will close out its weekend trip to the state of
Massachusetts on Saturday, Jan. 30, when the Cadets face ECAC East
rival Babson College at 4 p.m.
