NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Three different Cadets scored
goals, and sophomore G Chiara Traversa made 14 saves as the Norwich
University women's ice hockey team defeated Castleton State
College, 3-1, in an ECAC East contest Saturday evening at
Kreitzberg Arena.
After a scoreless first period, Norwich (11-2-3, 9-2-2 ECAC
East) opened the scoring early in the second period when sophomore
F Julie Fortier scored on the power play. The marker, Fortier's
team-leading 14th of the season, was assisted by junior F Kelsey
Cone and sophomore D Caitie Banfield.
The Cadets extended their advantage to 2-0 late in the second
period when senior F Sophie Leclerc scored her eighth goal of the
season off assists from freshman F Courtney Parisot and senior F
Katie Leupp.
Castleton (3-13-1, 3-9-1 ECAC) broke up the shutout bid late in
the third period when Amy Costa netted a power play goal off an
assist from Kaitlin Hayes at the 15:47 mark.
Norwich snuffed out any chance for an upset less than one minute
later when sophomore D Amanda Wilks scored her sixth goal of the
year at the 16:15 mark off feeds from Leclerc and sophomore F
Danielle Del Dotto.
Norwich outshot Castleton 49-15 in the game. Traversa made 14
stops to earn the win between the pipes for the Cadets. Katharyn
Dembowski turned aside 46 shots in the loss for the Spartans.
Norwich went 1-for-7 on the power play, while Castleton was
1-for-6 with the man-advantage.
Norwich will take a break from its ECAC East schedule on
Tuesday, Jan. 26, when the Cadets travel across Lake Champlain to
battle nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State University. The
non-league contest is set to get underway at 7 p.m.
