NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Junior G Cori Boston scored a
team-high 20 points, and sophomore F Antonio Davis posted a
double-double with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds as the
Norwich University men's basketball team defeated Johnson &
Wales University, 82-73, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference
(GNAC) contest Saturday afternoon at Andrews Hall.
Junior G/F Jaren Jeffcoat chipped in 15 points for Norwich (9-4,
4-2 GNAC), while freshman G Ryan Williams added five points and a
game-high seven assists.
The first half was a back and forth affair that featured seven
ties and three lead changes. A three-point play by sophomore G
Darell Marshall with 10 seconds left gave the Cadets a slim 34-31
halftime advantage.
JWU began the second half on a 10-2 spurt to take a 41-36 lead
at the 16:16 mark. Norwich responded with an 11-0 run over the next
three minutes to grab a 47-41 edge with 13:14 to play. The Wildcats
used an 11-3 run to move in front 52-50 at the 8:45 mark, and the
game see-sawed back and forth the rest of the way. Johnson &
Wales held a 58-57 lead with 6:22 to play, but a basket by Davis
and a three-pointer by Marshall sparked a 7-2 spurt by the Cadets,
which gave Norwich a 64-60 advantage with 4:58 on the clock. NU did
not trail again as the Cadets made all 12 of their free throw
attempts in the final 3:45 to secure the victory.
Lamonte Thomas led Johnson & Wales (5-8, 2-4 GNAC) with a
game-high 28 points, while Calvin Jones added 20.
Norwich scored 26 points off of 20 Johnson & Wales
turnovers. The Cadets made 48.3 percent (28-of-58) of their shots,
compared to just 40.3 percent (27-of-67) for the Wildcats. NU also
held a commanding edge at the free throw line, converting 24-of-36,
compared to just 13-of-24 for JWU.
Norwich returns to action on Monday, Jan. 18, when the Cadets
host GNAC rival Mount Ida College at Andrews Hall at 7 p.m.
