Men's Ice Hockey: Norwich Remains Unbeaten With 5-0 Win Over St. Anselm

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Senior F Craig Serino scored the game-winning goal midway through the first period, and senior G Ryan Klingensmith stopped all 15 shots that he faced to lead the No. 2-ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey team to a 5-0 victory over St. Anselm College in an ECAC East contest Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.

Senior F D.J. Fimiani and junior F Chad Anderson each added a goal and an assist to help the Cadets (12-0-3, 8-0-1 ECAC East) remain undefeated.

Norwich got on the scoreboard at 10:10 of the first period when Serino potted his second goal of the season off an assist from Fimiani. The Cadets held a 13-7 edge in shots during the opening 20 minutes, but they were unable to add to their lead and took a 1-0 advantage into the first intermission.

Fimiani made it 2-0 midway through the second period when he tallied his fourth goal of the season at the 10:03 mark off assists from senior D Steve Coon and sophomore D Owen Carpino. The Cadets extended their lead to 3-0 at the 16:55 mark of the second period when freshman F Kyle Thomas struck on the power play. The goal, which was the team-leading 11th of the season for Thomas, was assisted by Coon and senior D Eric Tallent. Norwich enjoyed a 10-5 edge in shots during the middle frame, and the Cadets carried their 3-0 lead into second intermission.

Norwich put the game away with two more goals in the third period. Anderson netted his eighth marker of the year when he corralled a rebound and scored while the Cadets were killing a penalty. The short-handed marker was assisted by Serino, whose initial shot was saved.

The Cadets capped the scoring late in the third period when sophomore F Emmond Bell scored off assists from Anderson and freshman F Blake Forkey with just 30 seconds remaining in the game.

The Cadets outshot the Hawks 12-3 in the third period and held a 35-15 edge in shots for the game. Klingensmith saved all 15 shots by St. Anselm to pick up his fourth shutout of the season. Alex Wyse made 30 stops for the Hawks.

NU went 1-for-4 on the power play, while St. Anselm was 0-for-2 with the man-advantage.

Norwich will conclude its four-game homestand next weekend (Jan. 22-23), when the Cadets host NESCAC rivals Trinity and Wesleyan.
