NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Freshman F Tory Allen scored
a pair of goals, and freshman F Blake Forkey added a goal and an
assist as the second-ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey
team defeated New England College, 6-2, in an ECAC East contest
Friday evening at Kreitzberg Arena.
Junior D Greg Eskedjian and freshman F Pier-Oliver Cotnoir each
added a goal and assist for the Cadets, who remain undefeated at
11-0-3 (7-0-1 ECAC East).
Norwich opened the scoring at the 7:08 mark of the first period
when freshman F Scott Schroeder found Allen for his first goal of
the game. Schroeder started the play when he stepped in front of an
NEC pass and skated into the Pilgrims' zone. He skated into the
right-hand faceoff circle before sliding a pass over to Allen, who
snapped a shot into the New England College goal.
New England College (6-7-1, 2-5-1 ECAC East) tied the score at
1-1 late in the first period when Alex Muse netted a power play
goal at the 19:05 mark. Jon Globke and Jeff Armando picked up
assists on the marker, which came at the tail end of a five-minute
power play.
The end of the first period featured a brief melee, which
resulted in a total of six players being penalized. The net result
of the fracas saw the Pilgrims begin the second stanza on the power
play. NEC wasted little time taking advantage of the opportunity as
Jarkko Leppanen scored off a feed from Filip Bjork just 50 seconds
into the frame.
Norwich tallied the equalizer midway through the second period
when Cotnoir tipped a shot by sophomore D Shawn Baker past NEC
goaltender Aaron Harvey to knot the score at 2-2 at the 9:28 mark.
Baker blasted a slap shot from the blue line, and Cotnoir got his
stick on the puck and tipped it perfectly past Harvey.
The Cadets moved in front for good at 18:55 of the second period
when Eskedjian scored a power play goal off assists from junior F
Chad Anderson and Forkey. The marker, which was Eskedjian's third
of the season, came off a scramble in front of the NEC net.
Norwich piled it on in the third period, scoring three more
times to account for the final margin. Forkey began the offensive
explosion at 3:21 of the third when he netted a power play goal off
assists from Cotnoir and Eskedjian. Senior D Eric Tallent made it
5-2 at the 7:02 mark when he scored a short-handed goal off a feed
from Schroeder. Schroeder skated in behind the NEC cage before
rifling a pass out to Tallent, who ripped a shot past Harvey to the
upper portion of the cage. Allen capped the scoring at 19:32 of the
third when he picked up a turnover and scored an unassisted marker.
Norwich outshot New England College 40-17 for the game. NU
senior G Ryan Klingensmith made 15 saves to earn the win between
the pipes for the Cadets. Harvey finished with 34 stops in the
Pilgrims' cage.
The game featured a total of five goals on the special teams.
New England College was 2-for-5 on the power play, while Norwich
went 2-for-4 with a short-handed goal as well.
