WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior G Erica Rate
poured in a game-high 21 points, and senior F Jess Jaggars posted a
double-double with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds as the
Norwich University women's basketball team routed St. Joseph
(Conn.), 84-39, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC)
contest Tuesday evening.
Senior G Ally Daniels added 16 points for the Cadets, while
senior G Natalie Marchese dished out a game-high nine assists.
The first six minutes of the game did not feature much scoring,
and St. Joseph actually led 5-4 at the 13:37 mark. Norwich began to
find its scoring touch over the next four minutes, ripping off a
12-0 spurt to move in front 16-5 with 9:16 to play before halftime.
NU led by 11 (25-14) at the 4:05 mark, but the Cadets closed the
stanza on a 15-4 run to carry a commanding 40-19 advantage into the
intermission.
Norwich (10-3, 2-0 GNAC) opened the second half on a 22-7 spurt
to build a 62-26 lead with 13:28 remaining in the game. The Cadets'
advantage never dipped below 33 points the rest of the way as they
cruised to the victory.
Norwich shot 41.9 percent (31-of-74) from the field, while St.
Joseph made only 24.5 percent (13-of-53) of its field goal
attempts. The Cadets buried 8-of-17 three-pointers, including
7-of-11 for Rate. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, connected on just
5-of-25 shots from behind the arc.
NU held a dominating 57-29 rebounding edge, which the Cadets
converted into a 22-2 advantage in second-chance points. Norwich
also scored 25 points off of 25 St. Joseph turnovers.
Ilaria Schiano led Saint Joseph (3-8, 0-2 GNAC) with 16 points,
while Michelle Fillion chipped in 10.
The Cadets will step out of GNAC play on Thursday, Jan. 14, when
they travel to Castleton, Vt., to battle in-state rival Castleton
State College. Tip-off for the non-league contest is set for 7 p.m.
