POTSDAM, N.Y. - Junior midfielder Sarah
Reuschel scored what proved to be the game-winning goal early in
the first half, and junior goalkeeper Alecia Wright made 11 saves
to make it stand up as the Norwich University women's soccer team
defeated Clarkson, 1-0, on the final day of the Clarkson Tournament
Sunday afternoon.
Reuschel took a crossing pass from junior defender Megan Gingras
and beat Clarkson goalkeeper Alex Sullivan to the right side of the
cage to give the Cadets (1-1-0) a 1-0 lead at the 10:53 mark.
Wright was fantastic in the NU goal the rest of the way, turning
aside all 11 shots that she faced en route to earning her first
shutout since blanking Castleton State last October. The 11 saves
marked a new career high for the Piffard, N.Y., product.
Clarkson (1-1-0) outshot Norwich 16-8 in the game, but Wright
was superb throughout the contest. She made seven of her 11 stops
in the second half to preserve the team's first victory of the
young 2009 season.
Reuschel, Wright and Saturday's starting goalkeeper Nicki
Hunsicker were all named to the all-tournament team.
Norwich will kick off its 2009 home schedule on Wednesday, Sept.
9, when the Cadets host in-state rival Johnson State. Game time
from Howard Field is set for 4 p.m.
