CASTLETON, Vt. - Courtney Chadburn scored the
game-winning goal 3:32 into the second overtime as Castleton
defeated Norwich University, 1-0, in non-conference women's soccer
action Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
Chadburn worked a nifty give-and-go play with Megan Blongy to
set up the game winner. Chadburn ran down a clear from the back on
the right wing, passed it inside the penalty area to Blongy, who
returned it to Chadburn in between two defenders. Chadburn struck a
rocket with her left foot that beat Norwich junior GK Nicki
Hunsicker just inside the far post.
Castleton (3-5-1) controlled play for much of the contest,
firing 31 shots to the Cadets' 13. Just 10 of those shots found
their way on net, however, and Hunsicker was able to turn away
eight of them to
keep the Cadets in the contest.
Norwich (4-5-0) nearly stole the game as regulation wound down
when freshman F Bianca Bogda found herself open on the right side
of the goal. However, her shot with 1:15 remaining went wide as
Castleton GK Ericka Davis came out to cut off the angle. Junior F
Karissa Doyon had a clean look at the goal with 39 seconds remaing,
but her shot sailed wide as well.
Davis stopped both shots that came on goal to earn her third
shutout of the season.
Norwich is idle until Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Cadets host
Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Albertus Magnus at
Howard Field. Kickoff for the conference match is set for 2:30 p.m.
