NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
volleyball team ushered in its 2009 campaign on Tuesday evening by
falling to visiting St. Michael's College, 3-1, at Andrews Hall.
The Purple Knights won by individual game scores of 25-23, 25-23,
21-25 and 25-20.
The first game was tight throughout, and Norwich (0-1) led 23-22
in the late stages. St. Michael's (1-0) scored the final three
points of the game to secure the 25-23 win.
SMC jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second game, but Norwich
used a 9-3 spurt to take a 12-10 lead. The game see-sawed back and
forth before a 9-2 run by the Purple Knights gave St. Michael's a
23-18 lead. The visitors hung on for a 25-23 victory.
The third game was close early, but a 5-0 Norwich spurt helped
the Cadets to an 11-6 lead. NU maintained a comfortable cushion
throughout the course of the third game en route to the 25-21
verdict.
St. Michael's took control of the fourth set, establishing a
commanding 20-7 advantage. A furious 13-4 spurt by Norwich helped
the Cadets crawl to within 24-20. That was as close as NU got,
though, as SMC preserved a 25-20 win.
Senior Lisset Magdaleno led the Cadets with 16 kills and 22
digs. Junior Molly Rice chipped in 29 assists and 20 digs.
Norwich returns to action this weekend (Sept. 5-6) when the
Cadets travel to Weston, Mass., to compete in the Regis College
Tournament. NU is slated to play five matches over the course of
the weekend.
