NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Charles Chancio fired a
complete game two-hitter to pitch Albertus Magnus past Norwich in
the first game, 7-1, and the Falcons held off the Cadets in the
nightcap, 6-4, to sweep the teams' Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
Albertus Magnus (5-11, 2-2 GNAC) jumped on Norwich early in game
one, plating six runs in the first inning. The Falcons added one
more run in the second inning, and the seven runs of support were
more than enough for Chancio, who was masterful throughout.
Norwich (0-15-1, 0-6 GNAC) got on the scoreboard in the sixth
inning when James Ramsay's run-scoring single brought home Tyler
Riel. Ramsay finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Ian Caird (0-2) pitched six innings and allowed seven runs on
nine hits and was saddled with the loss.
The Falcons built a 6-1 lead in the second game, before the
Cadets rallied with three runs in the fourth inning. Travis Dyke's
RBI single and Dustin Fleming's two-run double highlighted the
frame, which got NU back in the game.
Norwich was unable to get any closer, however. Dyke finished the
game 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Fleming went 1-for-3 with
two runs batted in. Donovan Brown was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while
David Maxfield went 2-for-3 with one run scored. Rob Knox was
1-for-3 as well.
Ryan Kelly (0-3) took the loss for the Cadets. The sophomore
tossed six innings, and gave up six runs on six hits.
Norwich will return to action on Tuesday, April 7, when the
Cadets travel to Colchester, Vt., to battle in-state rival St.
Michael's College in a non-league matchup. First pitch is slated
for 3:30 p.m.
