LYNDON CENTER Vt.- Jordan Barnes' three-run
pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the sixth capped an eight-run
rally that propelled Lyndon State College to a 9-6 come-from-behind
victory over Norwich University, in the nightcap of a non-league
doubleheader held at LSC's Skip Pound Field Thursday afternoon.
Trailing 6-1, the Hornets sent 12 men to the plate in the sixth
to secure the win. Michael Johnson had a two-run double to knot the
score at 6-6, before Barnes, who was pinch-hitting for Eric
Durocher, swatted his game-winning homer over the fence in
left-center field. Zach Maerder had three hits for Lyndon and Ryan
Wimble chipped in two doubles.
Sam Matthews, who relieved starter Jesse Ballard in the fourth,
was credited with the win, allowing only one earned run on three
hits in 3.1 innings of work. He struck out six Cadets, while
walking just one.
Joe Sleeman had three hits, and Mitch Blair added two for
Norwich. Ryan Kelly, the second of three Norwich pitchers in the
game, took the loss.
In the opener, Maerder and Stetson Hicks collected two hits each
to back the three-hit pitching of Josh Fletcher as Lyndon State
recorded a 3-1 win. Fletcher went the distance, allowing no earned
runs while fanning seven and walking two.
Travis Dyke, Dustin Fleming and Aron Sweder had one hit each for
Norwich, and Ian Caird absorbed the loss. He allowed one earned run
on six hits while striking out three and walking two in five and
one-third innings of work.
Lyndon State ends its season with an overall record of 9-27-1,
while Norwich finishes with a mark of 3-28-1.
