NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
softball team extended its win streak to eight straight games on
Sunday afternoon, sweeping a Great Northeast Athletic Conference
(GNAC) doubleheader from Emmanuel. The Cadets won 7-5 in the
opening game before taking a 15-5 five-inning decision in the
nightcap.
With the sweep, Norwich (18-16, 15-9 GNAC) clinches the No. 5
seed in the upcoming GNAC Tournament. The Cadets will host
eighth-seeded Simmons in a first round matchup on Tuesday, April
21.
Emmanuel, meanwhile, finishes its season with a record of 11-23
(8-16 GNAC).
The Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the
opening game, before Norwich rallied for the victory. The Cadets
scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings, before
exploding for four runs in the sixth to complete the comeback.
Whitney Grennon went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to
pace the NU offense. Emily Bean collected a pair of base hits for
the Cadets as well.
Katelyn Menard went the full seven innings to pick up the
victory in the circle for Norwich.
The Cadets were never challenged in the nightcap, scoring five
runs in the first inning and three more in both the second and
third frames. NU added four more runs in the fourth inning to
invoke the mercy rule and end the game.
Grennon blasted a pair of home runs and drove in seven runs to
lead the Norwich offense. Marley Balasco went 3-for-4 with a home
run, two RBIs and four runs scored. Jackie Donahue, meanwhile, was
3-for-4 with a triple and three runs batted in. Lindsay Cared added
three base hits and four runs scored.
Kelsey Buker and Hallie Grennon split time in the circle, with
Buker earning the victory for the Cadets.
