NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
baseball saw its modest three-game win streak come to an end on
Sunday as the Cadets dropped both ends of its Great Northeast
Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader versus Johnson & Wales.
The Wildcats took the opener 9-5, before earning a 7-1 victory in
the nightcap.
Johnson & Wales (17-16, 8-4 GNAC) had to come from behind in
the first game, scoring two runs in the sixth inning and three more
in the seventh to overcome a late 5-4 deficit.
Bryan Sayers smacked a two-run home run and Justin Maldonado
ripped a two-run double to pace the Wildcats at the plate.
Rob Knox and Travis Dyke each collected two hits apiece for the
Cadets in the opener. Norwich took a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning
on Dustin Fleming's RBI single and Sean Stone's run-scoring double.
The second game featured terrific pitching through the first
four innings. The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the
fourth inning when Dyke led off the frame by launching a solo home
run to right field.
Johnson & Wales exploded for five runs in the top half of
the fifth inning to chase Norwich starter Ryan Kelly, who pitched
well. Four of the Wildcats' five runs were unearned due to a pair
of NU fielding errors.
JWU added two more runs in the sixth inning to put the game out
of reach.
John Kuschman went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and one
run scored for the Wildcats, while Maldonado was 2-for-3 with a
pair of runs batted in.
Norwich (3-25-1, 2-12 GNAC) returns to action on Tuesday, April
28, when the Cadets host Daniel Webster at 2 p.m.
