NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from in-state
rival Lyndon State College on Wednesday afternoon. The Cadets snuck
past the Hornets, 7-5, in the opener before exploding for a 17-1
victory in the nightcap.
The Cadets, who have won five of their last six games, improve
to 12-16 on the season. The Hornets, meanwhile, fall to 1-9 on the
year.
Jackie Donahue, Lindsay Carey and Katelyn Menard led Norwich at
the plate in the first game. Donahue went 3-for-3 with two doubles
and three runs scored. Carey was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run
scored. Menard, meanwhile, went 1-for-2 with four runs batted in.
Norwich jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning, and the
Cadets led 5-1 after the third. Lyndon got to within 6-5 in the top
of the sixth, but Norwich put the game away with an insurance run
in the bottom of the sixth. NU then slammed the door in the top of
the seventh to secure the win.
The Cadets had no trouble in the second game, winning in five
innings due to the mercy rule.
Carey and Donahue both homered and drove in five runs apiece.
Norwich only managed 11 hits in the game, but the Cadets were aided
by 11 walks issued by Lyndon pitching.
Norwich will return to action on Friday, April 17, when the
Cadets host Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe St.
Joseph (Conn.) in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
