NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University baseball team opened its eight-game homestand on Monday afternoon with a 17-5 loss to visiting Plymouth State University at Garrity Field.

The Panthers (8-13) broke open a one-run game with 11 runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score a bit misleading. The contest was actually scoreless through five innings of play, and the Cadets trailed just 6-5 as the game moved to the ninth inning.

Norwich starter David Wygonski (0-4) was dealing early, striking out five batters through the first two innings. He finished with eight punch outs. Wygonski allowed two unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning, and was the hard-luck loser.

Garrett Brewer's two-run double in the sixth inning broke the scoreless tie and put the visiting Panthers on top 2-1. The Cadets got one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame when Rob Knox was hit by a pitch, stole second, was moved to third on a fly ball and came around to score on Joe Sleeman's RBI ground out.

PSU scored four times in the top of the seventh inning to make it a 6-1 game. Bryant Lausberg's two-run single highlighted the inning, which also featured three Norwich errors.

The Cadets came right back in the bottom of the seventh, pushing across four runs of their own. Travis Dyke, Donovan Brown, Sean Stone and Sleeman all connected for RBI singles in the frame to pull the Cadets to within 6-5.

Neither team scored in the eighth inning, but Plymouth State piled it on in the ninth. The Panthers sent 16 men to the plate in the inning, and 11 of them scored. PSU managed only six hits in the frame, but Norwich aided the Panthers' cause with four more fielding errors.

The Cadets (0-21-1) finished the game with nine errors, leading to 13 unearned runs.

Norwich will return to action on Tuesday, April 14, when the Cadets host in-state rival Castleton State in a non-conference doubleheader at Garrity Field. First pitch for the opening game is set for 2 p.m.
