NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
softball team splits a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC)
doubleheader versus Suffolk on Saturday afternoon. The Cadets
rallied for a 10-7 victory in the opening game, before losing a 4-2
decision in the nightcap.
Norwich's record moves to 10-16 (9-9 GNAC) following the split,
while Simmons moves to 8-19 (6-10 GNAC) on the year.
The Cadets trailed 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning in the
first game before scoring the final seven runs to take the victory.
NU got two runs back in the fourth on Marley Balasco's triple. The
Cadets then took the lead in the fifth on Mackenzie Pratt's two-run
double. Norwich added three more runs in the sixth inning to salt
the game away.
Balasco led the Cadets at the plate in the opener, going 4-for-4
with two doubles, a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs. Seana
Ellsworth, Whitney Grennon and Lindsay Carey each collected two
base hits to help pace the offensive attack.
Simmons took an early lead in the night cap, scoring a run in
the top of the first inning. The Sharks made it 2-0 in the fourth,
but Grennon hammered a two-run home run in the bottom of that frame
to tie the game at 2-2.
Simmons scored two runs in the sixth, though, to take the lead
for good. Norwich had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the
bottom of the sixth, but Grennon's long fly ball down the left
field line was ruled foul and the Cadets never threatened in the
seventh.
Balasco produced two of the Cadets' four hits on the afternoon,
while Grennon accounted for both of the team's RBIs.
Norwich will be back in action on Wednesday, April 15, when the
Cadets host in-state rival Lyndon State College in a non-conference
doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
