BOSTON - The Norwich University baseball team
was swept by Suffolk in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference
(GNAC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Rams won the first
game 7-1, before taking a 20-3 decision in the nightcap.
Tim Doyle (4-0) twirled a complete game five-hitter in the
opener, allowing just one unearned run over seven innings of work.
The Rams (19-4, 7-1 GNAC) broke open a 2-1 game with five runs in
the bottom of the sixth.
Ian Caird (0-3) allowed seven runs on nine hits in six innings
of work for the Cadets. Sean Stone, Dustin Fleming, Travis Dyke,
Sean Kennedy and David Maxfield all went 1-for-3 at the plate for
Norwich. Fleming scored the team's only run.
Suffolk jumped all over Norwich in the nightcap, scoring three
runs in the first inning and four more in the second to take a 7-0
lead after two frames. The Cadets cut their deficit to 8-2 in the
middle innings, but the Rams tacked on six runs in the fourth and
six more in the fifth to blow the game wide open.
Ryan Kelly (0-4) yielded seven runs and took the loss for the
Cadets on the mound. Greg Pawluk paced the Norwich offensive
attack, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Norwich (0-18-1, 0-8 GNAC) will return to action on Saturday,
April 11, when the Cadets travel to Standish, Maine, to take on St.
Joseph's (Maine) in a GNAC doubleheader.
