BENNINGTON, Vt. - Will Warner scattered three
hits over nine innings of work, and Eric Wells went 3-for-5 with
two home runs and four RBIs to lead Southern Vermont past Norwich,
11-1, in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at
Epstein Field.
The Mountaineers, who have won four straight games, improve to
5-12 on the season. The Cadets, meanwhile, drop to 0-11-1 on the
year.
Norwich got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second
inning when Rob Knox led off with a walk and came around to score
on Joe Sleeman's RBI double.
Southern Vermont came back with two runs in the bottom of the
second on Wells' first home run of the day. Pat Warrington's solo
home run highlighted the Mountaineers' two-run fourth inning as the
hosts moved in front, 4-1.
Southern Vermont blew the game wide open with five runs in the
fifth inning. Dan Cook's two-run homer highlighted the frame, which
gave the Mountaineers a 9-1 lead.
Wells' second home run of the game, a two-run shot in the sixth
inning, closed out the scoring. The run support was more than
enough for Warner, who allowed just one base hit after the fourth
inning. The freshman right-hander struck out 10 batters in the
game.
Ryan Kelly (0-2) pitched the first three innings for Norwich and
allowed just two runs on two hits. He struck out two and walked
three in his stint on the hill.
Norwich will resume its Great Northeast Athletic Conference
(GNAC) schedule on Saturday, April 4, when the Cadets host
conference foe Lasell in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
