NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Norwich University
softball team swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC)
doubleheader from Albertus Magnus Saturday afternoon, defeating the
Falcons by the lopsided scores of 11-0 and 16-0.
The Cadets (5-11, 4-4 GNAC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the
first inning of the opening game. NU added single runs in the
second, third and fourth innings. Norwich tacked on two more runs
in the fifth inning, and the game was stopped following the fifth
frame due to the mercy rule.
Lindsay Carey led the Cadets in the first game, going 2-for-4
with two doubles, three runs batted in and one run scored. Marley
Balasco went 1-for-4 with a two-run double, while Whitney Grennon
was 2-for-4 with a double, and RBI and three runs scored.
Kelsey Buker (1-1) and Mackenzie Pratt teamed up for the
shutout. Buker pitched 2.0 innings and yielded just one hit while
striking out two. Pratt, meanwhile, tossed 3.0 innings and allowed
only one hit and struck out seven.
Norwich jumped all over Albertus Magnus (0-6, 0-6 GNAC) in the
nightcap, as the Cadets scored four runs in the first inning and
three more in the second frame. NU added three more runs in the
third inning and six in the fifth to finish the game after five
innings.
Carey went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and three
runs scored, while Balasco went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs
scored and three RBIs. Grennon (2-for-3, double, two RBIs, four
runs scored) and Katelyn Menard (2-for-4, two doubles, four RBIs,
one run scored) were both instrumental in the game two victory as
well.
Hallie Grennon (1-0) picked up her first career win in the
circle for the Cadets. The freshman pitcher threw 4.0 innings and
allowed just two hits. Menard pitched a perfect fifth inning,
striking out two of the three batters that she faced.
Norwich will return to action on Friday, April 3, when the
Cadets are scheduled to open their home slate with a GNAC
doubleheader versus conference foe Emerson.
