EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Norwich University
softball team opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC)
competition on Saturday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader with
league rival Johnson & Wales. The Wildcats rallied for a 9-8
victory in the first game, while the Cadets secured a 6-2 win in
the nightcap.
Norwich (2-8, 1-1 GNAC) led the opening game 7-4 in the fifth
inning. Johnson & Wales (1-7, 1-1 GNAC) cut the NU lead down to
7-6 by plating two runs in the fifth. Then, after Norwich increased
its lead to 8-6 in the top of the seventh inning, Johnson &
Wales plated three runs in the last of the seventh to rally past
the Cadets. It marked the Wildcats' first win of the season.
Jackie Donahue led the Norwich attack in the opener, going
2-for-4 with two runs batted in and one run scored. Lindsay Carey,
meanwhile, was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Carey went 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the nightcap to help lead
Norwich to the victory. The Cadets scratched out a single run in
the first inning, and they made it 2-0 in the third. JWU scored in
the bottom of the third inning to cut its deficit in half, but a
three-run fifth pushed Norwich's lead to 5-1. Carey's run-scoring
single and Donahue's two-run home run highlighted the frame.
Mackenzie Pratt (2-4) earned the victory in the circle for the
Cadets in the second game, allowing just two runs over seven
innings of work. She yielded just seven hits, while striking out
six.
Norwich resumes its GNAC schedule on Sunday, March 22, when the
Cadets travel to Nashua, N.H., to face Rivier in a conference
twinbill.
