NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
women's ice hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to nine
straight games on Saturday evening, knocking off Williams, 4-2, in
a non-conference matchup at Kreitzberg Arena.
Kelsey Cone scored the game-winning goal midway through the
third period to break a 2-2 tie, and Sophie Leclerc added an
insurance marker later in the stanza as the Cadets improve to
13-7-1 overall.
Norwich opened the scoring late in the first period as Brittane
Michaud scored an unassisted power play goal at the 16:59 mark. It
marked Michaud's second marker of the season.
The Cadets held a 7-4 edge in shots in the opening 20 minutes,
and they carried their 1-0 lead into the second stanza.
Norwich extended its lead to 2-0 when Julie Fortier scored her
12th goal of the year off assists from Jaclyn Cleugh and Shannon
Silver at the 12:53 mark of the second period.
Williams (6-12-1) evened the score by scoring twice in a span of
3:23 late in the second period. Hannah Systrom got the Ephs going,
scoring off a nice pass from Tracey Ferriter at the 14:35 mark.
Lauren Zurek was also credited with an assist on the goal, which
was Systrom's second of the season. Williams knotted the score at
2-2 at the 17:58 mark when Sarah Herr scored on the power play off
assists from Sam Tarnasky and Mallory Green. It marked Herr's
second goal of the campaign
Williams outshot Norwich, 10-5, in the second period to get back
into the game.
Norwich came through with the game-winning tally at the 8:57
mark of the third period when Cone took scored her 12th goal of the
season off assists from Leclerc and Sarah Scardino. Leclerc put the
game away when she scored on the power play at the 17:25 mark. The
goal, Leclerc's team-leading 14th of the season, was assisted by
Amanda Wilks and Melissa Rundlett.
The Cadets dominated the third period, outshooting the Ephs
16-5. For the game, NU held a 28-19 edge in shots. Norwich went
1-for-4 on the power play, while Williams went 1-for-2 with the man
advantage.
Cindy Fortin got the win for Norwich between the pipes, stopping
17 shots on the night. Sara Plunkett made 24 saves for Williams in
the losing effort.
Norwich returns to action on Friday, Feb. 13, when the Cadets
host ECAC East rival Holy Cross at Kreitzberg Arena at 7 p.m.
