RUTLAND, Vt. - Sophie Leclerc and Amanda Wilks
each scored a goal and added two assists as the Norwich University
women's ice hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to seven
straight games on Tuesday evening, knocking off ECAC East rival
Castleton, 5-2.
Norwich (11-7-1, 10-5-1 ECAC East) opened the scoring at the
8:50 mark of the first period as Caitie Banfield netted scored her
second goal of the season. The power play tally was assisted by
Leclerc and Wilks.
Castleton (3-16-0, 3-12-0 ECAC East) tied the score less than
three minutes later as Amy Costa scored a power play goal at the
11:36 mark of the first period.
Norwich recaptured the lead late in the first period as Wilks
scored her ninth marker of the season off an assist from Mollie
Fitzpatrick at the 17:12 mark.
Castleton knotted the score at 2-2 early in the second period as
Page O'Neill scored on the power play at the 2:07 mark.
Norwich moved in front, 3-2, at the 14:00 mark of the second
period when Sarah Scardino notched her second goal of the year off
assists from Leclerc and Kelsey Cone. The Cadets made it 4-2 later
in the second period when Julie Fortier scored off assists from
Fitzpatrick and Suzanne Whittaker with just 55 seconds to play in
the stanza.
Norwich added an insurance marker at 11:16 of the third as
Leclerc scored on the power play. The goal, Leclerc's team-leading
12th of the season, was assisted by Melissa Rundlett.
Norwich outshot Castleton, 25-18, in the game. The Cadets' power
play was humming all night long, scoring three power play goals on
six opportunities. NU notched one man-up goal in each period. The
Spartans were 2-for-3 on the power play.
Cindy Fortin stopped 16 shots in the Norwich net to earn the
victory between the pipes for the Cadets. Amanda Hoy turned aside
20 of the 25 shots that she faced in the Spartan net.
Norwich returns to action on Friday, Feb. 6, when the Cadets
travel to Harrisville, R.I., to take on ECAC East foe Nichols
College. Faceoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
