NEWTON, Mass. - Christine Daniels scored 12 of
her team-high 14 points after halftime to help lead the Norwich
University women's basketball team to a 64-58 overtime victory at
Lasell Tuesday evening in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference
(GNAC) game.
Kayleigh Shappy added 13 points and three assists for Norwich
(16-6, 9-2 GNAC). Tara Stevenson chipped in nine points for the
Cadets, while Jess Jaggars netted four points and pulled down a
game-high 13 rebounds.
Daniels and Shappy combined to score six of the Cadets' 12
points in the overtime period. Norwich outscored Lasell 6-1 to
begin the extra session, and the Cadets never trailed in the frame.
A lay-up by Shappy and a jumper by Daniels put NU in front 56-52.
Then, after a free throw by Lasell's Tricia Culver, Ally Daniels
nailed a jumper to push Norwich's lead to 58-53 with just 2:14 to
play. Three straight points by Lasell pulled the Lasers to within
two points at 58-56 at the 2:00 mark, but a lay-up by Jaggars and
free throws by Erica Rate and Shappy iced the game.
The game, which featured 15 ties and 16 lead changes, was hotly
contested throughout. Lasell got off to a quick start, outscoring
Norwich 11-5 over the first five minutes. An 8-0 spurt by the
Cadets gave the visitors a 13-11 lead at the 12:05 mark, and the
game went back and forth the rest of the half. The Lasers ended the
stanza with a 5-2 spurt to take a 25-23 lead into the intermission.
Norwich shot just 23.3 percent from the field in the first half,
but the Cadets stayed in the game thanks to strong free throw
shooting (8-of-9).
The second half mirrored the first half with neither team able
to take control. Neither team led by more than four points as the
lead was constantly changing hands. Lasell led 48-44 with 4:43 to
play, but a free throw by Stevenson and a three-pointer by Rate
tied the score at 48-48 with less than four minutes remaining. A
lay-up by JoAnna Bishop pushed the Lasers in front 52-50 at the
1:36 mark, but Shappy converted a lay-up of her own moments later
to tie it the game at 52-52. Neither team was able to score in the
final minute, so the game moved to overtime.
Shauna Kelly led Lasell (7-17, 4-7 GNAC) with a game-high 15
points. Bishop and Tricia Culver each chipped in nine points apiece
for the Lasers.
For the game, Norwich converted only 34.8 percent (24-of-69) of
its shots. Lasell, meanwhile, made 38.1 percent (24-of-63) of its
field goals. NU finished 13-of-15 from the free throw line, while
Lasell made just 6-of-13 from the charity stripe. The Cadets held a
commanding 52-38 edge in rebounding. Norwich scored 20 points off
14 Lasell turnovers.
Norwich will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 21,
when the Cadets travel to Boston, Mass., to take on GNAC foe
Simmons. Tip-off for the conference clash is slated for 1 p.m.
