Women's Basketball: Norwich Gets Past Lasell, 64-58, In Overtime

Box Score

NEWTON, Mass. - Christine Daniels scored 12 of her team-high 14 points after halftime to help lead the Norwich University women's basketball team to a 64-58 overtime victory at Lasell Tuesday evening in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game.

Kayleigh Shappy added 13 points and three assists for Norwich (16-6, 9-2 GNAC). Tara Stevenson chipped in nine points for the Cadets, while Jess Jaggars netted four points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Daniels and Shappy combined to score six of the Cadets' 12 points in the overtime period. Norwich outscored Lasell 6-1 to begin the extra session, and the Cadets never trailed in the frame. A lay-up by Shappy and a jumper by Daniels put NU in front 56-52. Then, after a free throw by Lasell's Tricia Culver, Ally Daniels nailed a jumper to push Norwich's lead to 58-53 with just 2:14 to play. Three straight points by Lasell pulled the Lasers to within two points at 58-56 at the 2:00 mark, but a lay-up by Jaggars and free throws by Erica Rate and Shappy iced the game.

The game, which featured 15 ties and 16 lead changes, was hotly contested throughout. Lasell got off to a quick start, outscoring Norwich 11-5 over the first five minutes. An 8-0 spurt by the Cadets gave the visitors a 13-11 lead at the 12:05 mark, and the game went back and forth the rest of the half. The Lasers ended the stanza with a 5-2 spurt to take a 25-23 lead into the intermission.

Norwich shot just 23.3 percent from the field in the first half, but the Cadets stayed in the game thanks to strong free throw shooting (8-of-9).

The second half mirrored the first half with neither team able to take control. Neither team led by more than four points as the lead was constantly changing hands. Lasell led 48-44 with 4:43 to play, but a free throw by Stevenson and a three-pointer by Rate tied the score at 48-48 with less than four minutes remaining. A lay-up by JoAnna Bishop pushed the Lasers in front 52-50 at the 1:36 mark, but Shappy converted a lay-up of her own moments later to tie it the game at 52-52. Neither team was able to score in the final minute, so the game moved to overtime.

Shauna Kelly led Lasell (7-17, 4-7 GNAC) with a game-high 15 points. Bishop and Tricia Culver each chipped in nine points apiece for the Lasers.

For the game, Norwich converted only 34.8 percent (24-of-69) of its shots. Lasell, meanwhile, made 38.1 percent (24-of-63) of its field goals. NU finished 13-of-15 from the free throw line, while Lasell made just 6-of-13 from the charity stripe. The Cadets held a commanding 52-38 edge in rebounding. Norwich scored 20 points off 14 Lasell turnovers.

Norwich will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 21, when the Cadets travel to Boston, Mass., to take on GNAC foe Simmons. Tip-off for the conference clash is slated for 1 p.m.
