Box Score
NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Junior F Chad Anderson scored
two goals and assisted on another, and freshman F Blake Forkey
scored a goal and dished out three assists to help lead the No.
3-ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey team to a 6-2 victory
over in-state rival St. Michael's College in an ECAC East game
Tuesday evening at Kreitzberg Arena.
The Cadets outshot the Purple Knights, 39-9, but they did not
pull away until the third period when they broke open a one-goal
game with three goals in a span of less than 10 minutes.
Norwich (6-0-1, 5-0-0 ECAC) controlled the play in the first
period, but the Cadets were unable to score until the 18:15 mark
when Anderson netted a power play goal. Forkey's original shot was
saved by St. Michael's G Mike Dizgun, but the rebound deflected
through the crease and landed on Anderson's stick. The third-year
player wasted little time sliding it into the gaping net for his
third goal of the season. Forkey and sophomore F Emmond Bell were
credited with assists on the goal.
NU struck again just 91 seconds later when senior F Eric Tallent
worked a pretty two-on-one play with freshman F Steven Schroeder.
Tallent gathered the puck near center ice and skated in along the
right-side boards before zipping a pass over to Schroeder, who
buried a shot from the left circle for his second goal of the
season.
The Cadets held a 14-1 edge in shots on goal during an
entertaining and quick first period.
St. Michael's (1-5-0, 1-4-0 ECAC East) knotted the score early
in the second with a pair of power play goals by Matt Rigtrup.
Rigtrup's first marker, which was assisted by Dave Vorozilchak and
Nick Sheehan, came at the 4:47 mark. Then, with two Norwich players
in the pentalty box, Rigtrup struck again. Vorozilchak started the
play when his shot from the right point glanced off the right pipe
and into the right corner. Sheehan then moved the puck back up to
Vorozilchak, who slid a pass to Rigtrup at the left point. Rigtrup
then unleashed a slap shot that beat NU senior G Ryan Klingensmith
to knot the score at the 7:08 mark. Vorozilchak and Sheehan were
again credited with assists.
The Cadets regained the lead when Forkey netted a power play
goal off a pretty feed from Anderson. Anderson skated in and around
the St. Michael's net, and it looked like he was going to try to
score on a wrap-around. But just when Dizgun committed himself,
Anderson sent a pass through the crease to Forkey, who smashed it
into the open net. It marked Forkey's team-leading sixth goal of
the year.
Norwich outshot St. Michael's 15-3 during the second period, but
the score was still close thanks to some terrific saves by Dizgun.
NU finally blew the game open in the third period, scoring three
times. Anderson got the ball rolling at 1:17 of the stanza when he
tipped in a blast from sophomore D Scott Baker. Forkey started the
play when he worked the puck from the left corner up to Baker at
the left point. Baker then let go with a hard slap shot from the
point, which Anderson redirected for his fourth goal of the season.
Sophomore D Owen Carpino made it 5-2 at the 5:55 mark when he
converted a pass from senior F D.J. Fimiani. Fimiani skated behind
the SMC cage and found himself in the left corner before rifling a
pass right through the crease and onto the stick of Carpino. The
second-year performer then snapped off a quick wrist shot past
Dizgun for his first goal of the year.
Junior D Greg Eskedjian capped the scoring at the 11:10 mark
when he scored his first marker of the season off assists from Bell
and Forkey. The goal was scored just as a St. Michael's player was
coming out of the penalty box.
Klingensmith, who saw his scoreless streak snapped at 169
minutes, 4 seconds, made seven saves to earn the win between the
pipes for the Cadets. Dizgun stopped 33 shots for the Purple
Knights in the loss.
The Cadets finished the game with a commanding 39-9 edge in
shots. Norwich went 2-for-9 on the power play, while St. Michael's
converted 2-of-5 power play opportunities.
The Cadets will close out their first semester schedule on
Friday, Dec. 11, when they host Southern New Hampshire University
in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m. The game will be
