NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The No. 5-ranked Norwich
University men's ice hockey team earned a dominating 8-0 victory
over Hamilton College Saturday afternoon at Krietzberg Arena. The
Cadets had seven different players score in the contest, including
two goals by freshman F Scott Schroeder. Senior G Ryan Klingensmith
picked up his second straight shutout, running his scoreless streak
to 144 minutes, 17 seconds.
Norwich (5-0-1, 4-0-0 ECAC) jumped in front early in the contest
when senior D Eric Tallent found the back of the net to put the
Cadets up 1-0. Tallent handled a pass from fellow senior D Tyler
Stitt before sidestepping a defender and launching a rocket from
the top of the right circle into the upper corner of the net.
Schroeder then went on the attack, netting his first marker at
7:38 of the first. His fellow freshman linemates Pier-Oliver
Cotnoir and twin brother Steven Schroeder picked up assists on the
tally, which came on the power play.
It only took a few minutes for the Schroeder twins to strike
again, this time at the 12:55 mark. Tallent sent a breakout pass to
the red line that was gathered by Steven Schroeder and sent the two
Schroeders on a two-on-one breakaway into the Continentals' zone.
Scott Schroeder was there to receive the pass when his brother slid
it over to him, and he placed a nice one-timer into the back of the
net to give the Cadets a commanding 3-0 lead to take into the first
intermission.
NU held a dominating 17-8 advantage in shots on goal during the
opening stanza.
Norwich pushed its lead to 4-0 in the second stanza when junior
F Chad Anderson ripped a shot past Hamilton G Scott Hefferman. The
goal came at the 4:10 mark, and was assisted by freshman F Blake
Forkey and sophomore F Emmond Bell.
The Continentals (3-2-1, 2-2-0 NESCAC) almost managed to get
through the rest of the period unscathed, but Norwich was again
able to put one in. Cotnoir triggered the red light with only 52
seconds to play, with Forkey and Bell both picking up their second
assists of the contest.
The Cadets continued their offensive onslaught in the third
period when senior F D.J. Fimiani netted his first goal of the
young season.
Freshman forwards Colin Mulvey and Kyle Thomas both scored
towards the end of regulation to round out the afternoon's scoring.
Senior D Steve Coon picked up an assist on Mulvey's goal, which
came at 15:12 of the final frame, with a nice pass off the boards
to free the forward. Thomas notched the fourth tally of his rookie
campaign when he squeezed a shot inside the left pipe with just
less than three minutes remaining in the game.
Klingensmith registered 25 saves in picking up his second
shutout of the year. Hefferman stopped 28 shots in the losing
effort.
The Cadets will look to continue their climb up the national
rankings when they host ECAC East rival St. Michael's College on
Tuesday, Dec. 8. Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m., from Kreitzberg
Arena. The game will be videostreamed live on the internet for FREE
via Northeast Sports Network (nsnsports.net) and a live radio
broadcast will also be available (WDEV AM 550/FM 96.1).
