NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Senior F Craig Serino scored
what proved to be the game-winning goal early in the first period,
and senior G Ryan Klingensmith stopped all 23 shots that he faced
to lead the No. 5-ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey team
to a 5-0 victory over No. 13-ranked Amherst College Friday evening
in an ECAC East-NESCAC Interlock game at Kreitzberg Arena.
Serino scored his first goal of the season - a one-timer, which
he blasted from just inside the slot - at 2:59 of the first period
off an assist from senior F D.J. Fimiani. The Cadets held a slim
7-6 edge in shots on goal during the opening 20 minutes, but they
were unable to add to their advantage and took a 1-0 lead to the
middle stanza.
Norwich (4-0-1, 3-0-0 ECAC East) then exploded for three goals
in the second period to put the game away. Freshman F Blake Forkey
started the onslaught with his team-leading fifth goal of the
season at the 6:38 mark. The goal, which came off a rebound while
the Cadets were on the power play, was assisted by Anderson and
sophomore F Emmond Bell.
Bell, who was playing in his first game of the young season,
scored his first marker of the year off a feed from Anderson at the
11:20 mark. The second-year performer took the pass and skated
around the net to the top of the left circle before snapping off a
shot to the top right-hand corner of the cage.
Sophomore D Shawn Baker extended the Cadets' lead to 4-0 at the
14:44 mark when he tallied his first goal of the year. Bell and
sophomore F Tim Houston were credited with assists on the goal,
which was a fluttering shot from the point and fooled the Amherst
goaltender.
Freshman F Colin Mulvey capped the scoring midway through the
third period when he netted his second marker of the year off a
feed from Serino at the 10:41 mark.
Norwich outshot Amherst, 32-23, in the game. There were only a
total of five penalties whistled in the contest. The Cadets went
1-for-1 on the power play, while the Lord Jeffs were 0-for-2 with
the man-advantage.
Klingensmith was masterful throughout, making 23 saves in the
contest. Amherst G Cole Anderson turned aside 27 shots on the
night.
Amherst (3-2-0, 1-2-0 NESCAC) will wrap up its weekend trip to
Vermont on Saturday, Dec. 5, when the Lord Jeffs face ECAC East foe
St. Michael's College at 3 p.m.
The Cadets continue their nine-game homestand on Saturday, Dec.
5, when they host NESCAC rival Hamilton College at Kreitzberg
Arena. Faceoff for the Interlock game is set for 4 p.m. The contest
will be videostreamed live on the internet for FREE via Northeast
