NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Junior F Chad Anderson scored
the game winner in the 10th round of a shootout, and senior G Ryan
Klingensmith made some clutch saves down the stretch to help the
10th-ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey team capture the
12th annual PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout by defeating No. 3
Plattsburgh State Saturday evening at Kreitzberg Arena.
The Cadets won the shootout, 4-3, with Anderson scoring twice in
the 10-round affair. The game, which officially ended in a 1-1 tie,
will go into the record books as a draw. But don't try telling that
to the 1,233 spectators that witnessed Norwich take home its sixth
PrimeLink Shootout. The Cadets have never lost a PrimeLink game at
Kreitzberg Arena, improving to 8-0 all-time with four
championships.
Both teams had scored two goals through the first eight rounds
of the shootout. Plattsburgh moved in front in its half of the
ninth round when Chris Weiland's shot trickled past Klingensmith
after the Norwich goalie appeared to have made the stop. Freshman F
Blake Forkley stepped in to take NU's next shot, needing to score
to prolong the shootout. And with ice water in his veins, the
first-year player promptly placed a beautiful backhand goal into
the top corner of the net.
PSU's 10th round shot went wide of the net, giving Anderson his
game-winning opportunity. The third-year performer then ended the
game with his second goal of the shootout, beating Plattsburgh G
Ryan Williams to the stick-side and sending the Kreitzberg crowd
into a frenzy.
Anderson, who was the only player to score in both rounds of the
shootout, also buried a key goal in the fifth round to prolong the
event.
Norwich (3-0-1) jumped on top 1-0 just 34 seconds into the game
when freshman F Scott Schroeder got behind the Plattsburgh defense
and broke in all alone before beating Williams. Sophomore D Owen
Carpino got the play started when he hit Schroeder streaking
through the neutral zone with a long up-ice pass from deep in the
Cadets' zone. Senior D Tyler Stitt, who passed the puck to Carpino
also got credited for an assist on the goal, which was Schroeder's
third of the season.
Plattsburgh (7-1-1) had a golden opportunity to tied the game
moments later when they went on a two-man advantage. The Cadets
were able to kill off the 5-on-3 situation, however, to stay in
front. Norwich carried the majority of the play in the first
period, outshooting Plattsburgh by a 14-5 margin.
The Cardinals came out fast in the second period and
Klingensmith was tested early when he turned aside PSU on a
breakaway just two minutes into the frame. The senior net minder
made another huge stop with only 15 seconds remaining in the stanza
immediately following a NU turnover.
Both squads enjoyed three power play opportunities in the
period, but neither team could put a puck in the net. Norwich
outshot Plattsburgh 14-11 in the second period, which finished with
the Cadets holding onto a tenuous 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals knotted the game at 1-1 early in the third period
when Eric Satim scored just 43 seconds into the stanza off a feed
from Vick Schlueter. Plattsburgh carried the play in the third
period, keeping constant pressure on Klingensmith throughout the
frame. The Cardinals outshot the Cardinals 12-8 in the final 20
minutes, but NU was able to keep it a 1-1 game through the rest of
regulation thanks in large part to some phenomenal saves by
Klingensmith.
Norwich mustered little offense in the extra session, as they
were unable to put any shots on the Cardinal cage. PSU
collected four shots in the overtime, but all four were turned away
by Klingensmith and the game moved into the shootout.
Klingensmith was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player
after allowing just one goal through two games. He made 31 saves in
the victory over Plattsburgh, including some incredible stops in
the third period and overtime to preserve the tie and give Norwich
a chance to win it in the shootout.
Anderson and freshman F Kyle Thomas, who scored twice in
Norwich's 9-1 win over Wisconsin-Stout in Friday night's semifinal
contest, were named to the all-tournament team. Forkey, who netted
his first career hat trick against Wisconsin-Stout, was selected as
the tournament's Most Outstanding Rookie.
Williams, who made 35 stops for the Cardinals, was named to the
all-tournament team for Plattsburgh. Dan Sliasis joined him on the
squad for PSU. Middlebury's Martin Drolet rounded out the
all-tournament team, after potting a pair of goals in the Panthers'
7-3 victory over Wisconsin-Stout in the third-place game.
The Cadets continue their nine-game homestand next weekend (Dec.
4-5), when they host NESCAC rivals Amherst and Hamilton. The
program will be celebrating 100 Years of Norwich Hockey, and
several events are planned for the weekend. Both games will be
videostreamed live on the internet for FREE via Northeast Sports
Network (nsnsports.net) and they will also be on the radio (WDEV AM
& FM).
