PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Errol Daniyan pumped in a
game-high 22 points and Steve Thomas netted 16 points to help the
Plattsburgh State men's basketball team defeat Norwich, 77-66, in
the first round of the Cardinal Classic Saturday evening.
The Cardinals, who shot 52.4 percent (33-of-63) from the field,
also got 13 points from Chris Ruiz.
Norwich was led by senior F Israel Guardado and sophomore
G Joshua Cabrera, who poured 18 points apiece. Sophomore F Antonio
Davis added 12 points for the Cadets, who fall to 1-1 on the young
season.
Plattsburgh State (2-1) got off to a fast start, scoring the
first five points of the contest. Norwich responded by netting the
next six points to take a brief 6-5 lead at the 16:02 mark. The
Cardinals bounced back with an 17-7 run to open up an 22-13
advantage at the 10:47 mark of the first half.
A three-pointer by Ryan Williams and baskets by Guardado and
Davis ignited a 9-3 spurt, which helped the Cadets pull to within
24-22 at the 5:46 mark. Plattsburgh State closed the opening stanza
on a 13-7 run to carry a 37-29 lead into the intermission.
The Cardinals opened the second half on an 8-2 run to take a
45-31 lead at the 16:39 mark. Six straight points by Norwich drew
the Cadets to within eight points (45-37) less than two minutes
later, and the teams traded baskets for the next several minutes.
A three-point play by Guardado made it an eight-point game
(56-48) at the 11:16 mark, but Plattsburgh State reeled off 12
unanswered points over the next three minutes to extend its lead to
68-48 with 6:53 to play. Norwich never seriously threatened
Plattsburgh State the rest of the way, as the Cardinals secured the
victory.
Plattsburgh State held a 37-29 rebounding edge. Both teams
turned the ball over 15 times. Norwich shot just 40.3 percent
(27-of-67) from the floor. The Cadets made only 5-of-19 from
three-point range
Norwich will play RIT in the Cardinal Classic third-placee game
on Sunday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m.
