NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Junior Chad Anderson scored
the game-winning goal midway through the third period, and senior
Ryan Klingensmith made 20 saves to lead the 12th-ranked Norwich
University men's ice hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Southern
Maine on Saturday afternoon.
Anderson's goal at 11:58 of the third period gave Norwich
(2-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC East) a 4-2 lead, but the Cadets had to hang on
for the victory after Southern Maine's Chris Travis netted a
short-handed marker with 2:00 to play.
The Cadets opened the scoring at 3:45 of the first period when
freshman Scott Schroeder netted his second goal in as many games
off assists from freshman Steven Schroeder and sophomore Owen
Carpino.
Southern Maine (1-1-0, 1-1-0 ECAC East) knotted the score at 1-1
late in the first period when Craig Perhan scored at the 15:34
mark. David Nies and Pat Noonan picked up assists on the tally,
which was Perhan's first of the season.
The Cadets appeared to take control of the contest in the second
period, scoring a pair of goals in the first 8:19 to open up a 3-1
lead. Freshman Blake Forkey began the period with a goal just 50
seconds into the frame. The marker, which was the first of Forkey's
career, was assisted by freshman Matt McCann and Carpino. Then, at
the 8:19 mark, sophomore Tim Houston netted his first goal of the
year off a feed from freshman Kyle Thomas.
Southern Maine pulled to within 3-2 at the 12:00 mark when Zach
Joy netted a power play goal off an assist from Travis.
Anderson reestablished the Cadets' two-goal lead midway through
the third when he scored his first marker of the season off assists
from Forkey and McCann.
Norwich then had to hold off Southern Maine down the stretch to
secure the road win.
Klingensmith (2-0-0) made 20 saves to pick up the win between
the pipes for the Cadets. Koray Celik (1-1-0) made 25 saves in the
loss for the Huskies.
Norwich outshot Southern Maine, 29-23. The Cadets were 0-for-2
on the power play, while the Huskies went 1-for-6 with the extra
attacker.
The Cadets will return to action next weekend (Nov. 27-28) when
the they open their 15-game home schedule by hosting the 10th
annual PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout at Kreitzberg Arena. On
Friday, Nov. 27, regional rivals Middlebury and Plattsburgh State
will square off in the first semifinal contest at 4 p.m., while
Norwich and Wisconsin-Stout will match up in the second semifinal
at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 28, the losers of Friday's games will
play in the third-place game at 4 p.m., while Friday's winners will
square off in the championship game at 7 p.m. All four games can be
