NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
volleyball team dropped its second straight five-set match, falling
to Colby-Sawyer College, 3-2, Wednesday evening at Andrews Hall.
The Chargers won by set scores of 20-25, 25-17, 25-9, 18-25 and
15-11.
Norwich (11-7) jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first set and
rode that momentum to a 25-20 victory. Colby-Sawyer got to within
21-18 late in the set, but the Cadets finished on a 4-2 spurt to
secure the win.
Colby-Sawyer (13-4) came back strong in the second set, turning
a close 16-14 contest into a 25-17 victory. The Chargers ended the
set on a 9-3 run to secure the verdict.
CSC appeared to take control of the match in the third set as
the Chargers rolled to a 25-9 win. The game was actually tied 8-8
in the early going before Colby-Sawyer reeled off a 17-1 run.
Norwich overcame an early 8-5 deficit in the fourth set to even
the match at two games apiece. A 10-3 run by NU turned its 8-5
deficit into a 15-11 lead, and the Cadets held off the Chargers to
pick up a 25-18 victory.
The fifth set went back and forth early with the score
deadlocked at 2-2. A 7-1 scoring burst by Colby-Sawyer gave the
visitors a 9-3 lead, and the Chargers never relinquished it en
route to a 15-11 win.
Senior Lisset Magdaleno (eight kills, nine digs, eight blocks)
and junior Thea Evans (six kills, nine digs) led Norwich. Junior
Molly Rice (31 assists, eight digs) and sophomore Brittany Palmer
(nine kills, 14 digs) posted solid numbers as well.
The Cadets return to their Great Northeast Athletic Conference
(GNAC) schedule on Saturday, Oct. 10, when they travel to Nashua,
N.H., to take on Rivier and St. Joseph (Conn.). The action is set
to get under way at 10 a.m.
