NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
volleyball team split a pair of matches versus Great Northeast
Athletic Conference (GNAC) foes Saturday afternoon at Andrews Hall,
as the Cadets defeated Pine Manor College, 3-0, before dropping a
3-2 heartbreaker to Emmanuel College.
With the split, Norwich's record moves to 11-6 (2-3 GNAC).
The Cadets dominated their match versus Pine Manor, winning by
set scores of 25-10, 25-10 and 25-9. Senior Lisset Magdaleno (eight
kills) and junior Thea Evans (six kills, five service aces) led
Norwich against the Gators. Junior Molly Rice (nine assists) and
sophomore April Byllaardt (five service aces) put up solid
statistics as well.
Emmanuel had to rally past Norwich in the fifth set to pick up a
25-15, 23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 16-14 win. The Saints trailed 11-4 in
the fifth set before roaring back for the victory.
Magdaleno led the way against the Saints, smashing 13 kills.
Rice added a double-double with 39 assists and 17 digs. Evans
chipped in nine kills, 21 digs and three service aces, while
Byllaardt added 12 kills and nine blocks. Sophomore Brittany Palmer
(16 digs, eight kills) and freshman MaryRose Meany pitched in five
blocks.
The Cadets return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 7, when they host
Colby-Sawyer Colleg in a non-conference match. First serve from
Andrews Hall is scheduled for 7 p.m.
