NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Sophomore RB Andrew Fulford
rushed for a game-high 137 yards and a touchdown, and the Cadets'
defense limited Becker to 160 yards of total offense as the Norwich
University football team dismantled the visiting Hawks, 42-2, in an
Eastern Collegiate Football Conferene (ECFC) contest Saturday
afternoon at a rainy Sabine Field.
The victory, Norwich's second in row, moves the Cadets to 2-3
(2-0 ECFC). Becker remains winless on the season at 0-5 (0-1 ECFC).
Freshman RB Danny Triplett added 86 yards and two touchdowns on
the ground, while freshman RB Orwin Etkins chipped in 79 rushing
yards and two scores. Freshman QB Kris Sabourin rushed for 29 yards
and a touchdown, while also accounting for 50 yards through the
air. The Cadets totaled 320 rushing yards, marking the third time
this sesaon that the Cadets have surpassed the 300-yard mark.
The Norwich defense, which forced five turnovers in the game,
was led by junior LB Rocco DiMeco (eight tackles, 1.0
tackles-for-loss, one pass-breakup, one blocked field goal). Senior
DB Donovan Brown intercepted two passes, while sophomore DB D.J.
Siverhus and freshman DB Taylor Burbine each added one interception
apiece. The Cadets limited Becker to minus-14 yards rushing on the
day.
Norwich's first scoring drive was set up when Becker fumbled a
punt at its own 20-yard line. Etkins capped the five-play drive
with his first TD of the day, rushing the ball in from two yards
out at the 6:13 mark of the first quarter.
Becker got on the scoreboard later in the opening frame when an
errant shotgun snap by Norwich bounced out of the end zone for a
safety. Norwich got those two points back midway through the second
quarter when Becker snapped the ball out of the end zone on a punt
attempt.
The Cadets scored three touchdowns over the final 5:49 of the
second quarter to take a commanding 28-2 halftime lead. Fulford
started the scoring explosion as he rushed for an eight-yard
touchdown at the 5:49 mark. The run capped a six-play, 64-yard
drive, which gave NU a 14-2 lead after a missed two-point
conversion pass.
An interception by Brown set Norwich up at midfield for its next
possession, and the Cadets marched 50 yards in five plays to
increase their lead to 21-2 with 1:46 to play before halftime.
Triplett cashed in the drive with a 13-yard run to pay dirt.
Brown's second interception of the quarter on Becker's next
drive gave Norwich the ball at its own 26-yard line. The Cadets
methodically moved 74 yards in six plays to extend their lead to
28-2 with two seconds to play in the half. Sabourin's 31-yard pass
to freshman WR Chris Denton set up the Cadets with a first-and-goal
at the Becker three-yard line. Sabourin called his own number on
the next play, running the ball in from three yards out.
A 41-yard kickoff return by freshman WR Brandon Rudd, plus a
personal foul penalty against Becker, gave Norwich the ball at the
Hawks' 30-yard line to start the second half. Five plays later,
Etkins scored his second touchdown of the afternoon on a two-yard
scamper.
Norwich capped the scoring at 5:35 of the third quarter when
Triplett ran for a 50-yard touchdown.
Becker was led by freshman QB Robert Baker, who completed
13-of-30 passes for 168 yards. He did throw three interceptions,
however.
Norwich will put its modest two-game win streak on the line next
Saturday, Oct. 10, when the Cadets travel to Washington, D.C., to
take on ECFC rival Gallaudet University. Kickoff from our nation's
capital is set for 12 p.m.
