NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
volleyball team continued its recent stretch of strong play
Wednesday evening with a 3-0 defeat of MCLA on Senior Night at
Andrews Hall. The Cadets, who have won five of their last six
matches, beat the Trailblazers by set scores of 25-11, 25-16 and
27-25.
The Cadets (17-10) jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first set,
and they rode that momentum to a comfortable 25-11 victory.
Senior Lisset Magdaleno (11 kills) and junior Molly Rice (19
assists) led the Cadets in the victory.
The Trailblazers (11-12) opened a quick 3-0 lead in the second
set, but Norwich scored the next four points to inch in front 4-3.
MCLA fought back with four straight points to reclaim a three-point
lead at 7-4. An 11-4 spurt by the Cadets helped them take a 15-11
lead and they never looked back en route to a 25-16 verdict.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair that needed extra
points to be decided. MCLA took control early, outscoring Norwich
9-3 to start the frame. A 9-4 burst by the Cadets trimmed their
deficit to 13-12, but the Trailblazers scored six of the next seve
points to assume a 19-13 edge. NU again responded, reeling off an
8-1 run to take a 21-20 lead. A 4-2 run by MCLA gave the
Trailblazers a 24-23 lead, and it looked like they were poised to
secure the win. Norwich fought back one last time, however, ending
the game on a 4-1 spurt to complete the sweep.
The Cadets honored their two seniors, Lisset Magdaleno and
Nicole Kasanoff, in a special pre-game ceremony.
Norwich wraps up its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC)
regular season schedule on Saturday, Oct. 31, when Cadets travel to
Boston, Mass., to battle league rival Simmons College. First serve
is slated for 1 p.m.
