WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Jess Jaggars led a
balanced attack with a team-high 13 points and a game-high eight
rebounds as the Norwich University women's basketball team defeated
Maine-Farmington, 72-49, in third-place game of the Williams Winter
Classic Sunday afternoon.
Marie Girard scored a career-high 11 points, while Natalie
Marchese, Tara Stevenson and Christine Daniels each chipped in 10
points apiece for the Cadets (6-3).
Norwich used a 24-5 run midway through the second half to turn a
34-34 game at the 16:24 mark into a 58-39 Cadet lead with 7:07 to
play. Norwich was never threatened the rest of the way, en route to
the victory.
The first half was a back and forth affair that featured five
ties and two lead changes. Maine-Farmington started strong, taking
a 10-6 lead at the 15:22 mark. A 12-2 Norwich run gave the Cadets
an 18-12 edge with 8:21 to play before halftime. Six straight
points by Maine-Farmington tied the score at 18-18, and it remained
close throughout the remainder of the opening half. NU ended the
stanza on a 5-0 spurt to go into the locker room with a 32-26 lead.
Maine-Farmington opened the second half on a 8-2 run to tie the
score at 34-34, but that was when Norwich went on its game-deciding
run. Three points by Laurel McWilliams, then four in a row by
Jaggars gave Norwich a 41-34 lead. Then, after a basket by
Maine-Farmington, Daniels hit a jumper and Jaggars connected on
three more baskets to increase NU's cushion to 48-36. The Cadets
never let Maine-Farmington back into the game.
Norwich shot 39.2 percent from the field for the game, while
holding Maine-Farmington to 32.2 percent. The Cadets forced 27
turnovers, while only committing 15 miscues themselves. NU held a
slim 47-45 rebounding edge.
Maine-Farmington (3-6) was led by Caitlyn Laflin, who scored a
game-high 24 points. Erin Porter added 11 points.
Girard represented Norwich on the all-tournament team, following
her first career double-figure scoring game.
The Cadets return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 6, when they travel
to New Paltz, N.Y., to take on SUNY New Paltz. Tip-off is set
for 5 p.m.
