PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Lamonte Thomas scored a
game-high 25 points, dished out eight assists and snared six
rebounds, and Justin Adams chipped in 13 points as Johnson &
Wales defeated Norwich, 72-63, in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) men's basketball game Saturday afternoon.
Tavarius Roberson posted 10 points for the Wildcats, who improve
to 8-11 (7-5 GNAC).
Israel Guardado led the way for Norwich with a career-high 13
points and seven rebounds, while Joshua Cabrera added 10 points and
three assists for the Cadets (5-13, 3-8 GNAC). Jaren Jeffcoat
posted six points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Darrel
Marshall chipped in nine points.
The two teams traded leads early in the game with the score tied
19-19 with 8:29 to play in the first half. Johnson &
Wales then went on a 10-2 run to put the Wildcats up 29-21 with
3:37 remaining. Norwich closed out the first half with a 13-6 run
to cut the lead to 35-34 heading into halftime.
Johnson & Wales controlled the action early in the second
half, taking a 53-40 advantage with 12:54 left in the contest.
Norwich cut the lead down to five points several times late in the
second half, but the Cadets could not get over the hump as JWU held
on for the victory.
Norwich shot just 36.5 percent from the field, while Johnson
& Wales converted 42.2 percent from the floor. The Wildcats
outrebounded the Cadets, 41-40.
Norwich returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 3, when the Cadets
host GNAC rival Mount Ida at Andrews Hall at 7 p.m.
