HENNIKER, N.H. - The 13th-ranked Norwich
University men's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with New
England College in an ECAC East contest Saturday afternoon.
Eric Tallent scored a power play goal early in the third period
to knot the score at 2-2, and that is how it would end. Norwich
(10-5-3, 8-3-2 ECAC East) maintains its three-point lead atop the
conference standings with the draw. New England College (12-6-1,
7-5-1 ECAC East) remains in second place, three points behind the
Cadets.
The two teams played evenly through much of the opening period
before NEC's Olli Kalliosaari scored off a nice pass from Johan
Granath at the 14:51 mark. Norwich held the slight 15-10 lead
in shots on net in the first period, but Pilgrim goalie Aaron
Harvey stopped all 15 shots to keep the Cadets off the scoreboard.
The two teams battled through the majority of the second period
scoreless as the Cadets held a commanding 15-7 lead in shots on
net. Norwich's persistence on the offensive end finally paid off as
Greg Eskedjian scored on the power-play with just 59 seconds
remaining in the second, knotting the game at 1-1. Tyler Stitt and
Tallent were credited with assists on the goal, Eskedjian's second
of the weekend. NEC responded quickly as Granath scored off a
rebound just 21 seconds later to give the Pilgrims a 2-1 advantage
heading into the final period.
Tallent tied the game early at the 2:42 mark of the third period
on the power play. Stitt earned an assist on the goal, Tallent's
fourth of the year. The battled through the remainder of regulation
and overtime scoreless as each team settled for the tie.
For the game, Norwich held a commanding 46-27 edge in shots. The
Cadets cranked up their power play, scoring on two of their five
opportunities. NEC went 0-for-5 on the power play.
Norwich goaltender Ryan Klingensmith was solid between the pipes
for the Cadets, stopping 25 shots on the night. Harvey made 44
saves in the Pilgrims' net.
Norwich will resume its ECAC East-NESCAC Interlock schedule next
weekend (Feb. 6-7), when the Cadets host NESCAC foes Williams and
Middlebury at Kreitzberg Arena. The Williams game is on Friday,
Feb. 6, at 7 p.m., while the Middlebury contest is set for
Saturday, Feb. 7, at 4 p.m. Both games will be available live on
