NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Sophie Leclerc and Kelsey
Cone each potted first period goals, and Cindy Fortin stopped each
of the 21 shots that she faced to lead the Norwich University
women's ice hockey team to a 2-0 shutout victory over UMass-Boston
in an ECAC East game Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena.
The Cadets have recorded three consecutive shutouts, and improve
to 9-7-1 (8-5-1 ECAC East). The Beacons, meanwhile, fall to 8-8-1
(8-5-1 ECAC East).
Norwich got off to a fast start as Leclerc scored just 10
seconds into the first period. Norwich won the opening faceoff and
skated into the UMass-Boston zone, where Cone and Sarah Scardino
set up Leclerc for her 10th goal of the season. Leclerc received
the puck in the left-hand faceoff circle and snapped a wrister past
Beacons' goaltender Leah Hallett to make it 1-0 before the fans
were even settled into their seats.
Norwich made it 2-0 later in the first period when Cone scored
her ninth of the season off an assist from Leclerc at the 15:40
mark. Leclerc had the puck in the right-hand faceoff circle before
sliding a pass over to Cone, who was set up in the slot. The
Manchester, Vt., native wasted little time beating Hallett with a
quick wrist shot that slipped between the pads.
The Cadets outshot the Beacons, 15-9, in the second period, but
neither team was able to score, and the game moved to the final 20
minutes with Norwich in front 2-0.
UMass-Boston outshot Norwich, 9-8, in the final stanza, but the
Beacons were not able to solve Fortin, as the Cadets hung on to run
their unbeaten streak to five straight.
For the game, NU held a 34-21 edge in shots. The Cadets went
0-for-9 on the power play, while the Beacons were 0-for-6 on the
man advantage.
Norwich returns to the ice at Kreitzberg Arena on Saturday, Jan.
31, when the Cadets host ECAC East opponent Salve Regina at 3 p.m.
