MANCHESTER, N.H. - Craig Serino scored a pair
of goals, and Tim Houston added a goal and three assists as the
13th-ranked Norwich University men's ice hockey team defeated St.
Anselm, 8-3, in an ECAC East game Friday evening.
With the win, Norwich (10-5-2, 8-3-1 ECAC East) remains on top
of the conference standings with a league-best 17 points. It marked
the sixth straight loss for St. Anselm, which falls to 4-10-1
(3-8-1 ECAC East).
After a scoreless first period, Norwich opened the scoring early
in the second stanza as Serino scored his first of the game at the
1:26 mark off an assist from Shawn Baker. St. Anselm tied it up at
1-1 less than three minutes later as Brendan Carroll scored his
first goal of the season off a pass from Joe Fernald at the 3:48
mark.
The Cadets reclaimed the lead at 7:54 of the second when Nikita
Kashirsky potted his team-leading 12th goal of the year off assists
from D.J. Fimiani and Owen Carpino. It took the Hawks less than 90
seconds to knot the score at 2-2 as John Hennessey tallied his
first goal of the year off assists from Fernald and Carroll at the
9:06 mark.
The second period scoring frenzy continued just 1:20 later as
Norwich's Eric Tallent scored his third marker of the season at the
10:26 mark off passes from Greg Eskedjian and Houston. The Cadets
made it 4-2 late in the second period when Eskedjian netted his
first career goal off an assist from Emmond Bell at the 17:09 mark.
St. Anselm opened the third period quickly, as Ryan Butler
scored his third goal of the year just 55 seconds into the final
frame to pull the Hawks to within 4-3. St. Anselm went on the power
play just moments later, but it was Norwich that turned the tables
and scored a short-handed goal at the 3:03 mark as Rico Piatelli
found Serino for his fourth of the season.
Serino's second goal seemed to break St. Anselm's backs, as
Norwich added three more goals later in the period to close out the
scoring. Bell netted his seventh of the year off an assist from
Houston at the 5:31 mark. Then, just 66 seconds later, Houston
tallied his first career goal off a pass from Bell at 6:37 of the
third. Piatelli closed out the scoring, as he registered his sixth
of the season off assists from Houston and Jim Koehler at the 14:42
mark.
The eight goals scored marked a season high for the Cadets.
Norwich outshot St. Anselm 40-21, including a 17-3 edge in the
third period. The Cadets went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the
Hawks were 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
Ryan Klingensmith was solid between the pipes for the Cadets,
making 18 saves in the win. Alex Wyse gave up eight goals on 40
shots, before being pulled following Piatelli's marker.
Norwich will wrap up its weekend trip to New Hampshire on
Saturday, Jan. 31, when the Cadets travel to Henniker, N.H., to
battle ECAC East rival New England College. Faceoff for the contest
is slated for 4 p.m. The game will be available live on the radio
