WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Val Beckwith scored a
game-high 19 points, and Lauren Yanofsky added a double-double with
18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Bates past Norwich, 84-70,
in a women's basketball game Saturday evening.
Kellie Goodrich added 10 points for the Bobcats, who improve to
8-1 on the season.
Norwich (5-3) was led by Ally Daniels, who scored a team-high 14
points and dished out a game-high four assists. Jess Jaggars,
Christine Daniels and Tara Stevenson each added eight points apiece
for the Cadets.
Bates scored the first six points of the game, and the Bobcats
led 20-9 at the 11:59 mark. A 20-10 Norwich run pulled the Cadets
to within 30-29 at the 2:34 mark. Bates used a 6-2 spurt to move in
front 36-31, but a basket by Christine Daniels just before the
buzzer brought Norwich to within 36-33 at halftime.
The Cadets remained in the game despite converting just 35.0
percent of their first half field goal attempts. The Bobcats
converted 48.1 percent of their first half shots, but only led by
three at the break because of nine turnovers.
Bates opened the second half on a 12-2 run to increase its lead
to 48-35 at the 15:55 mark. Norwich was unable to get any closer
than 11 points the rest of the way, as the Bobcats went on to the
14-point victory.
Bates shot a blistering 57.6 percent from the floor in the
second half, and finished the game at 53.3 percent. Norwich hit
40.5 percent of its shots in the second half and finished the
contest at 37.7 percent. The Cadets outrebounded the Bobcats,
43-37.
Norwich returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 4, when the Cadets
take on Maine-Farmington in the consolation game of the Williams
Winter Classic. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
