NASHUA, N.H. - Antonio Davis scored a
career-high 25 points, and Robert Thurman posted a double-double
with 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Norwich University men's
basketball team past Rivier, 73-69, in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) game Tuesday evening.
Davis was on fire from the floor, connecting on 10-of-15 field
goals, and hitting all three of his three-point attempts. The
freshman forward, who scored 16 of his 25 points in the second
half, also pulled down nine rebounds. Joshua Cabrera scored 11
points, and Darell Marshall added 10 points and five assists for
the Cadets, who have won two of their past three games and improve
to 5-11 (3-6 GNAC).
Norwich shot a red-hot 53.3 percent from the field in the second
half to overcome a one-point halftime deficit. The game was a back
and forth affair, which featured 11 ties and 11 lead changes. But
Norwich took control down the stretch, closing the game on an 11-4
spurt to turn a 65-62 deficit at the 4:07 mark into a 73-69 win.
Rivier (8-7, 5-5 GNAC) got off to a good start, taking an 18-11
lead at the 10:43 mark of the first half. Norwich battled back with
a 10-3 run to tie the score at 21-21 with 6:13 to play. Nine
unanswered points by the Rivier gave the Raiders their largest lead
of the night at 30-21 at the 3:22 mark, but the Cadets finished the
half on an 11-3 spurt to trim their deficit to 33-32 at the
intermission. Cabrera scored five points in the closing minute of
the period, including a three-pointer at the buzzer, to give NU
momentum as the teams headed to the break.
The teams traded baskets over the first seven minutes of the
second half, and the score was tied at 46-46 at the 12:48 mark. A
lay-up by Cabrera and five points by Davis ignited an 8-2 Norwich
run that gave the Cadets a 54-48 lead with less than 10 minutes to
play. Rivier bounced back with an 8-2 run of its own to tie the
score at 56-56 at the 6:52 mark. Another few minutes of back and
forth action saw the game tied for a final time at 66-66 with 2:46
to play.
Norwich trailed 67-66 moments later, but a jumper by Davis and a
dunk by Thurman gave the Cadets the lead for good. Rivier got to
within one point at 70-69, but Norwich held on by making three of
four free throws down the stretch.
Rivier was led by Lance Bisson, who scored a team-high 22 points
and added nine rebounds and five assists. D.J. Poitras chipped in
16 points and eight rebounds for the Raiders, while Felipe Lima
posted 14 points.
For the game, Norwich shot 44.1 percent from the field, while
Rivier shot 41.0 percent. The Cadets outrebounded the Raiders,
39-33.
Norwich will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 29, when the
Cadets host GNAC foe St. Joseph's (Maine) at Andrews Hall. Tip-off
for the conference game is slated for 7:30 p.m. The two teams met
earlier this season, with the Monks securing a 58-52 victory in
Standish, Maine.
