NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Chad Anderson and Emmond Bell
scored goals, and Ryan Klingensmith stopped 23 of the 24 shots that
he faced to lead the 12th-ranked Norwich University men's ice
hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Neumann Friday evening at
Kreitzberg Arena.
The win vaults the Cadets (4-2-2) into the Times Argus
Invitational championship game, where they will face Gustavus
Adolphus on Saturday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m. The Golden Gusties upset
No. 5-ranked Elmira 4-1 in the first semifinal contest. The Soaring
Eagles will match up with Neumann in the consolation game on
Saturday at 4 p.m.
Norwich opened the scoring at 4:14 of the first period as
Anderson buried a shot from close range. The goal, Anderson's
team-leading fifth of the season, was assisted by Rico Piatelli and
Craig Serino.
Neumann (8-5-1) had several good chances to tie the game,
generating a pair of power play opportunities. Klingensmith stopped
all seven shots that he faced to keep the Knights off the
scoreboard. The Cadets, who outshot the Knights 9-7 in the opening
20 minutes, carried their 1-0 lead into the second period.
Neither team was able to score in the second period, as Norwich
maintained its 1-0 lead following 40 minutes of action. Both teams
had opportunities in the frame with the Cadets firing 14 shots and
the Knights ripping off nine shots.
Norwich doubled its lead early in the third period as Bell
cashed in the Cadets' lone power play chance of the night off
assists from Nick Quagliani and Nikita Kashirsky just 48 seconds
into the final stanza. The goal, Bell's third of the year, gave the
Cadets a 2-0 lead.
Neumann began to turn it up offensively as the third period
continued, and the Knights' pressure final paid off when Matt Ward
scored on a breakaway at the 12:29 mark. Neumann was unable to
tally the equalizer, however, and Norwich held on for the 2-1
victory.
Neumann goalie Ross MacKinnon was strong between the pipes for
the Knights, stopping 28 of the 30 shots that he saw on the night.
The game was a clean and crisply played affair that featured
only eight penalties. The Cadets went 1-for-1 on the power play,
while the Knights were 0-for-3.
