NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Walden St. Juste poured in
16 of his game-high 26 points in the second half as Albertus Magnus
pulled away from Norwich, 86-68, in a Great Northeast Athletic
Conference (GNAC) men's basketball game Saturday afternoon.
St. Juste was on fire from behind the three-point line, as he
accounted for six of the Falcons' 11 triples in the game. Bobby
Leonzo added 12 points for the Falcons, who improve to 7-6 (3-3
GNAC). Andrae Beckford chipped in 10 points, while Mike Barber
posted seven points and a game-high 10 assists.
Norwich (3-10, 1-5 GNAC) was paced by Jaren Jeffcoat, who scored
a team-high 14 points. Robert Thurman added 13 points and nine
rebounds, while Joshua Cabrera scored 12 points and dished out four
assists. Darell Marshall netted seven points and a team-high five
assists, while Antonio Davis scored eight points and grabbed nine
rebounds.
Norwich got off to a quick start as Cabrera and Jeffcoat each
hit three-pointers in the first two minutes of the game to stake
the Cadets to a 7-0 at the 17:44 mark. Albertus Magnus used an 18-4
spurt over the next 6:19 to pull ahead 18-11 with 11:25 to play
before halftime. A 9-2 Norwich run, which was capped by another
Cabrera triple, tied the score at 20-20 at the 9:30 mark. The
Falcons then reeled off a 20-9 run to open up their largest lead of
the half at 40-29 with 3:11 remaining in the stanza. Norwich
finished the frame on an 8-2 spurt to make it 42-35 at the
intermission.
The Cadets pulled to within 44-39 early in the second half, but
Albertus Magnus outscored 10 unanswered points over a span of 2:51
to move in front 54-39 at the 15:26 mark. Six straight Norwich
points made the score 54-45, but the Falcons ripped off a 21-9 run
to take a 75-54 lead at the 8:36 mark. The Cadets were unable to
get any closer than 14 points the rest of the way, as Albertus
Magnus went on to the victory.
The Falcons converted 23 Norwich turnovers into 26 points. The
Cadets held a 49-37 rebounding edge. NU shot 41.4 percent from the
floor, while AMC converted 44.0 percent of its shots.
Norwich will resume its GNAC slate on Monday, Jan. 19, when the
Cadets host Emerson at Andrews Hall. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
