PORTLAND, Maine - The Norwich University
women's ice hockey team complete its weekend sweep on Saturday
afternoon, knocking off ECAC East rival Southern Maine, 4-2.
Norwich (7-7-0, 6-5-0 ECAC East) scored two quick first period
goals to jump on top, 2-0 less than nine minutes into the game.
Melissa Rundlett started the scoring at the 6:50 mark when she
scored a power play goal off assists from Amanda Wilks and Caitie
Banfield. Danielle Del Dotto made it 2-0 just 2:04 later when she
scored an unassisted goal at the 8:54 mark.
Southern Maine (9-5-2, 8-2-0 ECAC East) cut its deficit in half
at the 14:05 mark of the first period when Kylie Blasen scored a
power play goal off assists from Katie Paradis and Danielle Ward.
Norwich outshot Southern Maine 9-7 in the first period, which
ended with the Cadets in front, 2-1.
Norwich held a 9-7 edge in shots in the second stanza, but
neither team was able to score and we went into the final 20
minutes with the score still 2-1 in favor of NU.
The Cadets put the game away with two goals in a span of 15
seconds midway through the third. Sophie Leclerc scored what proved
to be the game-winning goal at the 12:51 mark off assists from
Kelsey Cone and Keely Blyth. Then, just 15 seconds later, Banfield
added an insurance tally off a pass from Brittane Michaud at the
13:06 mark.
Southern Maine capped the scoring at 18:22 of the third period
as Amanda Shorey scored off assists from Paradis and Ward.
Norwich goaltender Cindy Fortin made 18 saves to earn the win
between the pipes for the Cadets. Kristen Gresko stopped 26 of the
30 shots she faced in the loss for the Huskies.
NU went 1-for-7 on the power play, while USM was 1-for-4 on the
man advantage.
Norwich will kick off a four-game homestand next weekend (Jan.
23-24), when the Cadets host ECAC East opponents St. Anselm and New
England College at Kreitzberg Arena. The Norwich-St. Anselm game is
slated for Friday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. The NU-NEC contest is set for
Saturday, Jan. 24, at 3 p.m.
